SLIFE Students

Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) are born outside the United States and have recently arrived as English language learners. SLIFE students may include but not be limited to:

  • Asylees
  • Refugees
  • Unaccompanied youth
  • Undocumented youth
  • Migratory students
  • and other immigrant children and youth

SLICE students frequently have gaps in academic knowledge & skills and sometimes critical social& emotional needs. As SLIFE Students enter a new education system, they may respond differently to new academic, language, and social-emotional experiences.

SLIFE students add a rich diverse heritage of multilingualism and culture to the classroom, imparting unique knowledge that strengthens the learning environment.

It is vital to acknowledge the strengths and abilities SLIFE students bring, as well as recognize and assist as they navigate challenges.
